“ASEXUAL THINGS I DID BEFORE REALIZING I WAS ASEXUAL” SERIES
I realized in October 2021 that I am asexual, meaning that I do not experience sexual attraction to anybody of any gender. This realization came to me at the age of 24, which means that I spent a great deal of my formative years very confused about sex and society. Below are five samples from my upcoming zine, “Asexual Things I Did Before Realizing I Was Asexual.” This is a series of comic strips telling stories about things I did that should have been dead giveaways that I was asexual, but weren’t, because asexuality is an extremely misunderstood and invisible identity under the queer umbrella.
Something else I am working on is a longer, more personal graphic memoir about my road to realizing my asexuality. Ultimately, my goal in drawing about asexuality is to create more visibility of the existence of asexuality and help dismantle the compulsory sexuality that plagues so many of us before we realize that there is nothing wrong with us; we are simply asexual, and asexuals are cool as hell.
